How Can I Be A Better Neighbor?

Whether you have lived in your home for years, just recently moved to a new neighborhood, or recently moved to Saint Peter, you will want to do everything in your power to be a good neighbor.

One of the ways of helping out your neighborhood and your community is to make sure you comply with City regulations concerning removal of weeds and tall grass, clearing sidewalks of snow and ice, and helping ensure our streets are cleared after each snowfall by complying with the snow emergency regulations.

Sidewalk Clearance
After a summer of mowing lawns, we turn our attention to providing for safe passage along the many miles of sidewalks in Saint Peter. Snow and ice buildup create hazardous conditions along the sidewalks, leading to falls and possible injuries.

City regulations require property owners to remove snow and ice from the entire width of the sidewalk within 24 hours after the snowfall ends. If property owners don't follow the regulations, the City will provide for the sidewalk to be cleared and the property owner will be billed.

If you have a concern about a sidewalk in your area that hasn't been cleared properly, please let us know. While we will make every attempt to work with property owners on this and other issues, it is important to remove the snow and ice to ensure the safety of pedestrians.

Weed and Tall Grass Removal
We've all seen it...those yards that seem to have never known the cut of a lawn mower blade! In addition to being unsightly, these areas can lead to an increase in rodent infestation, decreasing visibility at corners resulting in traffic safety issues, and an increase in pollen causing misery for allergy sufferers. Based on those reasons, the City Council has in place regulations requiring grass to be shorter than 6" and for hazardous/noxious weeds to be removed.

If you haven't mowed your lawn in a while and it looks like your own private jungle, you run the risk of receiving a citation. If you haven't responded to the request to take care of the problem, the City may contact someone to mow it on your behalf and send you a bill for the services.
